Summary: It takes a few listens to sink in, but on "Aquemini", Outkast have pulled off a rare feat in hip-hop: they've made a good record that's a masterpiece of subtlety. What's more, it's their third record, and they've yet to fall into a rut--and that alone puts them in line for an award. The Organized Noize production crew is sublime, working with live musicians and crafting hook-filled soundscapes that complement Big Boi and Andre Benjamin's melodic patter. Summary: I try not to throw around the word classic too much but Outkast's 1994 debut probably deserves it's place amongst the best hiphop albums of all time. I didn't really check out Southernplayalistic.. until recently and not being a fan of Outkast's recent work, I wasn't really expecting to like this so much. I'm also not a fan of Southern hiphop, in fact I would go as far as to say the majority of it is absolute garbage, so this was a pleasant surprise, and it's the best hiphop album i've heard form down south.



Andre & Big Boi are now well known in pop culture, but when they dropped this album they were teenagers straight out of Atlanta. The most impressive of the two is definetely Andre, who is an amazing rapper, and I have no clue why he now sees himself as a "singer". Big Boi is not as great, vcoab is more simplistic and hes not as good a lyricist as Andre though both their flows are on point. The production is quality courtesy of also then unknown Organised Noise, using live instruments throughout and creating a very funky, laid back sound. Though it's true that Outkast were probably more juvenile and gangsta (ish) then on their later releases, at the moment it still stands as my favourite album of theirs (I still haven't listened to ATLiens). The only criticsm of this album is the number of skits, only 11 of the 17 tracks are actually songs, the rest are an intro, various skits and a reprise of Players Ball, but despite this it's still an amazing listen from start to finish.



All tracks are great but particularly like the title track, Players Ball, Ain't No Thang, Git Up Git Out, Claimin True & Crumblin' Erb, a must for any hiphop collection.
